Newpin continues to perform well in its 2nd year
Australia's first social benefit bond continues to deliver for families and investors in its second year, successfully reuniting vulnerable families and supporting them to stay together.
In its first two years, Newpin has successfully restored 66 children to their families and supported another 35 families to prevent their children from entering care. This translates to an 8.9 per cent return to investors for the second year of the bond, building on a 7.5 per cent return in the first year.
Combined with results from the first year, Newpin has a cumulative restoration rate of almost 62 per cent. The restoration rate is the proportion of children referred to the Newpin program that are returned from out-of-home care to their families. This achievement is considerably higher than a comparison rate of 25 per cent for business as usual.
The Newpin social benefit bond is an innovative partnership between the NSW Government, Uniting and Social Ventures Australia (SVA). It raised $7 million in private investment to deliver and expand Uniting's Newpin program. Newpin is an intensive, centre-based program that helps parents to build positive relationships with their children. It aims to restore children in out-of-home care to their families and prevent at-risk children from entering care by helping parents create safe family environments.
The results so far are very encouraging and suggest Newpin is providing effective support to vulnerable families, many of whom struggle with complex issues, including family violence and substance abuse. The NSW Government commends Uniting on their impressive results so far and thanks investors for their continuing support. We also thank SVA for their work behind the scenes.
All family restorations are independently decided by the NSW Children's Court. Uniting and investors do not make these decisions. The results for the bond are independently certified by Deloitte.
